Mechanism: The spring loaded handle has a horizontal rest or "OFF" position. An interlock inside the enclosure prevents this handle being moved into the "RUN" position from the rest position it being necessary first to move it to the "START" position. After allowing sufficient time for the motor to reach its full speed, the handle is moved firmly to the "RUN" position where a latch will retain it only when the no-volt coil is energized. The case iron cover is fitted with a mushroom STOP button which causes the starter to trip when depressed by releasing the RUN position latch.
Contacts: All fixed contacts are of Nickel plated copper mounted on phosphor bronze contact blades with spring loading to have uniform contact. Moving contacts are of heavy gauge plated copper.
Overloads: The overload bimetal blades operate against a common trip bar whose position relative to them can be varied by means of a calibrated control inside the unit, providing stepless full load current adjustment between the upper and lower limits of each rating. Sustained over current causes the trip bar to move, opening the no-volt release coil circuit which in turn releases the latch allowing the moving contacts to return to the OFF position. A subsidiary pawl is fitted to arrest this movement at the OFF position.
